Family Home, Pixbo, Sweden

Extensive renovation and remodelling of existing 300 sqm residential house. Works were undertaken as a self build, employing sub-contractors only for works requiring specialist certification.

The brief was to create a family home that was light, open and spacious but had areas of intimacy and cosiness. Aspect and topographical location have heavily influenced the proposed floor plans. The front of the property faces south and while being perched on a steeply graded hill it enjoys beautiful views across picturesque ponds and the surrounding woodland. New large terraces were designed to maximise useful outdoor space for dining in the treetops, relaxing with a view, and playing surrounded by nature.

The entrance level of the house has raw hard wearing materials, but has been made to feel inviting by linking the entrance hall to a cosy lounge area with a traditional fire place. It allows for a pause upon arrival before continuing up to the main living space.

The open plan first floor has 4 distinguished areas: Kitchen, Dining, Reception and a TV-snug. The kitchen commands a central position and is a key component which provides a balanced link between the light and airy front of the house and the moody back of the house. The TV snug provides an area of cosiness, tucked away off the reception. Bespoke built-in joinery and furniture is an integral part of the design of the house.

All rooms on the top floor are accessed off a central spacious hallway. The ceiling is lined with timber throughout and existing timber columns and beams have been exposed to create a visual rawness and honesty.
